“Good morning beautiful”
The words flashed across my cell phone screen at 7.14 am. I was getting ready for work. I knew I was going to have a long day at work. I was dreading the annual general meeting that was scheduled for 2 pm. I had slacked off a project I was working on and my headspace seemed blurry. I was going to make the most of the day. I was not ready for the early morning distraction from Osas.
I unblocked him so we could communicate about our next meeting. But I realized it was not such a great idea because he kept sending messages at odd times. I prayed Yemi would not catch any of those notifications when I was spending time with him. So I set my notifications to “do not disturb.”
“Good morning.”
I stared at my screen for a brief second contemplating if I needed to write more or add emojis. I decided it was not necessary and pressed the “Send” button. I walked into the kitchen and looked at the beautiful mess in the sink. My older sister had cooked and not taken the time to do dishes.
Why was I living with her in the first place?
She was family. My only sibling. She was a Registered Nurse and worked crazy hours. She was a six-figure earner who proceeded in living the good life. She purchased a BMW and a three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bathroom.
After college, I had a hard time finding a job and also paying my bills. I could not find the job that made the seventy thousand I had accrued in student loans worth it. I graduated with a degree in Business Administration and a minor in English. I got a job at the headquarters of a popular clothing company. I worked as a customer service representative making twenty-five dollars an hour.
“I don’t know why you are so picky about finding a job.” my sister Faithfulness said and rolled her eyes.
“I have to find what I want. Do you know how much I owe in student loans? Seventy grand.” I informed her.
“Well, it won’t stop other bills from rolling into the mailbox every month. So why not take one of these offers until something better comes along. In the process you would also have job experience.” she advised.
She was right. She allowed me to move in with her. I picked the bedroom upstairs and furnished it to my taste.
I stood in the kitchen looking at what part of the sink to attack first. I decided against doing so until I was done with work. I opened the kitchen cabinet and pulled out a mug. I rinsed it off and put it in some tea bags. I got a new notification on my phone.
“Are we still meeting up today?”
Osas.
My guilty pleasure.

The day went by quickly. I pulled into my job, an accounting firm with about eighty employees. This was a job I had been working at for about six months. I was started off with about seventy thousand dollars a year which was more than enough for me to live on. I gave my sister some money which went into the rent and utilities. I could not save this much money if I lived on my own. Besides she was hardly ever home, so having me around was more of a benefit to her. She was afraid to rent out the other room to anyone else. The annual general meeting lasted two hours. The two grey-haired gentlemen from the headquarters were present. They were partners who pretty much owned the firm. We talked about reports, the financial standing of the company, the projects we were working on, and the review of staff. I was tired.
Between breaks, I sent messages to my new boyfriend Yemi. He was genuinely interested in my life and my work.
“Can we do dinner tonight?”
I read the message at 2.33 pm after the meeting. My heart skipped a beat. I already made plans to see Osas. What type of woman would make plans to see an ex when a current boyfriend was trying to make one?
Me. I had to think of something quickly. Something that would not need a person because that would end up making the person an alibi. I already had so many complications in my current life and did not need anymore.
“Not tonight hun, I have a project I need to finish at work, I will be working late.”
I had lied to this good man. He knew I was working on a project but staying back at the office to work late was not my thing. I preferred working in the comfort of my own home, in my pajamas watching old sitcoms.
“Aww shucks, maybe we can go somewhere this weekend.”
He replied. One thing with Yemi, he was persistent. He was understanding. A trait that Osas lacked. Osas wanted what he wanted when he wanted it.
“That would be awesome. I am up for it.”
I replied and pressed the send button.
In about three hours, I would be meeting Osas at our favorite spot downtown. I was tempted in changing the location, but I knew I would never run the risk of running into Yemi because his job and home were East of downtown, about an hour and a half away, two hours with traffic.
All the lines were falling into place.
