A recent report by the World Health Organisation (WHO) has indicated that over 122 million more people are now facing hunger in the world.

According to the publication that was released by the organisation on July 12, the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, the Covid-19 pandemic, repeated weather shocks and conflicts from other parts of the world are the main reasons for the rise.

With the latest report, around 735 million people are now currently facing hunger all over the world. The organisation arrived at the 735 million mark after the 2023 figure was added to the last conducted report of 2019 that showed 613 million people.

If trends remain as they are, the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of ending hunger by 2030 will not be achieved, the report warns.

The report also shows Africa as the worst-affected region with one in five people facing hunger on the continent, more than twice the global average.

Apart from Africa, hunger is also still on the rise in western Asia and the Caribbean. The organisation also stated that more than 3.1 billion people in the world have been unable to afford a healthy diet since 2021.
