Renowned activist Aisha Yesufu has rejected the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal’s judgment upholding Bola Tinubu’s victory, alleging the results were rigged.
Speaking during a TV program on Saturday, Yesufu, co-founder of #BringBackOurGirls, said she would never accept Tinubu as president because “he rigged his way to be declared the winner.”
She criticized the tribunal’s ruling as a “political coup” and “civilian coup” that stole the people’s mandate. Yesufu supported Labour Party’s Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential polls.
Yesufu sat through the 13-hour judgment and called it a “movie” acted out by the justices. She said the proceedings lacked transparency by not being televised fully and the judges appeared biased in favor of Tinubu and the APC.
The activist faulted the tribunal for declining live coverage of proceedings until the verdict. She alleged the joy on the judges’ faces showed they were not impartial.
Yesufu said politicians believe they control courts and quickly urge people to go to court if dissatisfied with election results.
Tinubu was declared winner of the 2023 presidential election, with the tribunal dismissing petitions by the PDP, Labour Party and Allied People’s Movement last week. The opposition parties alleged irregularities in the polls.
Yesufu vowed to continue fighting alongside Nigerians to reclaim the “stolen mandate” of the people. Her rejection adds to criticisms of the tribunal’s ruling by other political activists and groups.
