Local media outlets report four of the dead were local farmers, and 10 were from the cartel. Some of the criminals were hacked to death with machetes. Local La Familia Michoacana boss Rigoberto de la Sancha Santillan – known as El Payaso – was killed in the fighting. Jos Luis Cervantes Martnez, head of the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Mexico, said El Payaso’s criminal cell was responsible for the deaths of 13 members of Mexico’s security forces in 2021. He also confirmed that El Payaso was killed by civilians last Friday, along with “a couple of high and medium-level hitmen”. Mexico State Governor Delfina Gmez strongly condemned the violence.
