President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday honoured Nigeria’s Super Falcons following their historic triumph at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, commending the team for bringing pride and joy to the nation.
At a special reception held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, President Tinubu conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on each of the 24 players and 11 technical crew members. He also announced generous rewards, including the naira equivalent of $100,000 to each player and $50,000 to each member of the coaching staff.
In addition, all players and officials were allocated three-bedroom apartments at the newly completed Renewed Hope Estate in Abuja.
“You gave us pride and joy,” Tinubu said. “This honour is well-deserved. You have inspired millions of Nigerians and elevated our nation’s standing in global sports.”
In a lighthearted moment, the President revealed that he avoided watching the final live due to the tension, joking that he didn’t want to risk high blood pressure. “I almost gave up, but you didn’t and that is the Nigerian spirit,” he remarked.
The Nigerian Governors Forum, represented by its Chairman and Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, also presented a ₦10 million cash gift to each team member in recognition of their outstanding performance.
The Falcons clinched their 12th WAFCON title after a thrilling victory over South Africa in the final, further solidifying their dominance in African women’s football. Their win has been hailed as a major milestone in Nigerian sports history and a testament to the resilience, discipline, and excellence of Nigerian women in football.
President Tinubu emphasized that the team’s success aligns with his administration’s Renewed Hope agenda, encouraging national unity and youth inspiration. He praised the players for their discipline, teamwork, and patriotism.
The event at the Villa marked a moment of celebration for the Super Falcons, who have now won four of the last five WAFCON tournaments 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2025 cementing their legacy as Africa’s most successful women’s football team.
