Five students of the Nigerian Law School (NLS), Yola Campus, remain in captivity four days after they were kidnapped along the Wukari-Benue Expressway while traveling to resume classes.
The six students were abducted on Saturday in Benue State. As of Wednesday, one of the victims had regained freedom, but the remaining five are still being held by the kidnappers, who have reportedly demanded a ransom of ₦20 million for each of them.
The victims, identified as Reverend Ernest Okafor, Ogbuka Fabian, Nwamma Philip, Okechukwu Obadiegwu, Obalem Emmanuel, and Obiorah David, were said to be on their way from Onitsha, Anambra State, to Adamawa when the incident occurred.
Although it remains unclear which of the six has been released, the situation has sparked concern among colleagues and families of the abducted students.
Speaking with newsmen, a fellow student at the NLS Yola Campus confirmed the kidnapping and expressed fear over the fate of the captives.
When contacted, Udeme Edet, spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, confirmed that police efforts were ongoing but did not provide specifics. “I don’t know about any rescue operations because I am not the one in charge of them. But the police are working to bring them back,” she said.
Efforts to reach the Taraba State Police Command for comments were unsuccessful, as its spokesperson, Abdullah Usman, was recently reported deceased.
This latest abduction comes just weeks after a similar incident involving 20 medical students from the Universities of Jos and Maiduguri, who were kidnapped in August while attending a convention in Enugu. They were released after eight days, with a reported ransom demand of ₦50 million.
As of the time of this report, the fate of the remaining five law students hangs in the balance.
