Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has honoured Super Falcons defender Tosin Demehin with a ₦30 million cash prize and a house in recognition of her outstanding performance at the 2024 Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The announcement was made during a civic reception held in Akure to celebrate Ondo indigenes who were part of the victorious Nigerian squad at the tournament in Morocco last month.
Alongside Demehin, the governor also awarded ₦15 million each to Mary Akinsola, the team’s media officer, and Mary Oduboku, the team’s secretary, for their significant contributions to Nigeria’s historic win.
“This is a proud moment for us. Tosin Demehin has made Ondo State proud on the continental stage,” Governor Aiyedatiwa declared to a cheering crowd. “As a token of our appreciation, the state government is awarding her ₦30 million and a house at Sunshine Estate, Oba-Ile.”
Hailing from Ilaje Local Government Area, Demehin played a key defensive role throughout the tournament and was praised by the governor as a shining example of talent, discipline, and resilience.
“I am extremely delighted to welcome home our brave daughters. Their dedication, hard work, and team spirit helped secure this victory. You have not only brought glory to the nation but have honoured Ondo State,” the governor added.
Aiyedatiwa also commended Akinsola and Oduboku, both from the state’s southern senatorial district, for their essential support roles during the Falcons’ campaign.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to sports and youth development, the governor promised ongoing investment in young talents and the creation of enabling environments for their success.
He further pledged to support the Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure, aiming to facilitate their swift return to Nigeria’s premier league.
Expressing gratitude, the governor thanked President Bola Tinubu for nationally honouring the Super Falcons team, noting that such recognition boosts athletes’ morale across Nigeria.
The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Henry Segun, assured that sports in Ondo State would continue to thrive with strategic backing, while Ondo State Football Association Chairman, Dele Sunday Ajayi, praised the governor as the first in the country to honour Super Falcons players and officials from the state—a gesture that will inspire aspiring athletes.
In her response, Tosin Demehin expressed heartfelt thanks to the governor and the people of Ondo State for the warm reception and generous rewards.
“Receiving this honour from my home state means the world to me. As a former Sunshine Queens player, I know there is massive potential in women’s football here. This support gives hope to many young girls with dreams like mine,” she said.
