FIFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against the South African Football Association (SAFA) and midfielder Teboho Mokoena for allegedly breaching player eligibility rules in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The case stems from South Africa’s 2–0 win over Lesotho on 21 March in Polokwane, where Mokoena featured despite being due to serve a one-match suspension.

The 28-year-old had collected bookings against Benin in November 2023 and Zimbabwe in June 2024, which, under FIFA regulations, automatically triggered a ban.

FIFA confirmed in a letter that both SAFA and the player have been charged and must respond within six days.

The matter has been referred to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.

If found guilty, the result will be overturned to a 3–0 win in Lesotho’s favour, and additional sanctions such as fines or suspensions could follow.

A forfeit would leave South Africa tied on 14 points with Benin but still top of Group F on goal difference.

Lesotho would climb to nine points, remaining fifth but closing the gap on Nigeria and Rwanda, who both sit on 11 points.

South Africa face Zimbabwe and Rwanda in their remaining fixtures in October, matches that could prove decisive in their bid for qualification.

SAFA has yet to issue an official statement.
