Nigeria have slipped to 45th position in the latest FIFA world ranking released on Thursday morning.
The Super Eagles dropped further down the table following a series of inconsistent results in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Their faltering campaign has left them on the brink of missing out on the tournament, with dropped points against lower-ranked opposition proving costly in both the race form qualification and the global standings.
The Elephants remain unbeaten and sit at the top of Group F in the qualifiers.
Nigeria are now the sixth-highest-ranked team on the continent. Morocco lead the way in 11th place, followed by Senegal (18th), Egypt (35th), Algeria (38th), and Côte d’Ivoire (44th).
The Super Eagles’ slide means they are outside Africa’s top five for the first time since April this year.
Nigeria, three-time African champions will need improved performances in the upcoming international break to avoid further decline in the global standings.

Meanwhile, Spain have reclaimed the number one spot in the world for the first time since June 2014.
La Roja leapfrogged Argentina, who lost 15.04 ranking points and fell from first to third, while France moved up to second place in the reshuffle.
The next FIFA ranking update will be released on October 23, after the international break.
