Ademola Lookman will miss Nigeria’s final and crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying clash against Benin Republic after picking up a yellow card in the 2-1 win with Lesotho.

It was Lookman’s second booking of the qualifiers, and under FIFA regulations, he will now serve a one match suspension.

While his absence will surely be felt, it could also serve as a blessing in disguise an opportunity for others to write their names in the hearts of Nigerians.

Lookman has struggled to make a real impact in recent outings for the Super Eagles.

Over the last three matches, he has failed to register a goal or an assist, and has failed to produce any kind of performance that passes the eye test.

With Nigeria in desperate need of goals and victory, head coach Eric Chelle might consider handing a starting role to Samuel Chukwueze, one of the team’s most creative wingers.

Chukwueze replaced Lookman in the 71st minute against Lesotho, though he had a relatively quiet showing.

However, with more minutes and rhythm, he could bring the attacking spark Nigeria needs on the flanks.

The Super Eagles have it all to play for. Nigeria currently sits third in Group C with 14 points, just behind South Africa (15 points) and Benin Republic (17 points).

To qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Nigeria must beat Benin and hope Rwanda holds South Africa to a draw. It’s a tight finish, but the door to qualification is still open just barely.

All eyes will be on Uyo and Johannesburg for the final round of matches, two finals are going on at once.

Nigeria against Benin with Benin looking for a draw and Nigeria desperate for a win and South Africa desperate to win.
