The Kogi State government has launched an intensive aerial and ground operation following the abduction of the pastor, his wife, and several worshippers from a Cherubim and Seraphim church in Ejiba, Yagba West Local Government Area, during Sunday service.
Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, said security agencies, alongside local authorities, are working to secure the release of the victims. “The Governor, His Excellency Alh Ahmed Usman Ododo, is coordinating efforts, and we urge citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities,” he stated.
Video footage from the scene shows the church in disarray, with shoes and Bibles left where congregants had been seated. A witness described hiding during the attack and pleaded for urgent assistance to rescue the victims.
The incident follows a growing trend of attacks on worshippers in Kogi and neighboring states. On November 18, 2025, bandits attacked Christ Apostolic Church, Oke-Isegun, Eruku in Kwara State, killing five and abducting 38 worshippers before they were released days later following coordinated security interventions.
Authorities continue a manhunt for the perpetrators in Ejiba, and the state government has advised worship centres in vulnerable areas to reconsider services until security improves. Residents remain on edge as operations to recover the abducted continue.
