On the heels of an electric performance against Tunisia where he registered a goal and two assists, some fears were raised when Liverpool FC striker Alexander Isak was spotted training alone ahead of their World Cup Group F match against the Netherlands.
Swedish national team press officer Petra Thoren explained that Isak was following an individual recovery plan after Sunday’s emphatic win over Tunisia.
“It’s part of an extra recovery day after the match. I understand the question given his background, but this is something that is decided day by day.”
For a player whose Liverpool stint has thus been blighted by a stop-start pattern of unfortunate injuries, the concern is understandable. However, Isak’s explosiveness and sharpness in the Tunisia game will be an encouraging sign that the marksman will be back at full fitness when the new season kicks off.
But first, he’ll have to contend with club teammates Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, and Cody Gakpo as the Netherlands and Sweden face off in Houston on Saturday.
