Harvard University has hired a drag performer as a new visiting professor for its Studies of Gender and Sexuality program. The Ivy League school announced over the summer that Kareem Khubchandani, an associate professor from Tufts University, will teach a course centered on the television show RuPauls Drag Race in the spring semester. Khubchandani is widely known by his drag stage name, “LaWhore Vagistan,” a persona the academic has made an integral part of his teaching, often delivering lectures in the guise of the character. The persona has been a personal project for over a decade, even spawning a music video titled Sari. In a 2015 self-interview published by Johns Hopkins University Press, Khubchandani offered an explanation for the provocative stage name. “My name is LaWhore Vagistan, my preferred pronouns are ‘she’ or ‘aunty.’ I chose LaWhore because my family traces its origins to Pakistan: Lahore is an important city in Pakistan, and well, Im a bit of a w*ore,” he wrote. He added, “And Vagistan because I see the subcontinent as one, big, beautiful Vagistan. Khubchandani, who is an associate professor of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies at Tufts, will teach two classes over the course of two semesters at Harvard: Queer Ethnography in the fall and RuPaulitics: Drag, Race, and Desire in the spring. The latter will focus on the popular cable television show RuPauls Drag Race. He is the author of books including Decolonizer Drag and Ishstyle: Accenting Gay Indian Nightlife, and is debuting his newest book this fall, Lessons in Drag: A Queer Manual for Academics, Artists, and Aunties. News of Khubchandanis new job emerged just days afte US President Trump unfroze $2.4 billion in federal grants to Harvard. The agreement that led to the unfreezing stipulated the institution would operate and fund a new suite of trade schools. This would be a giant trade school, or a series of trade schools. It would be run by Harvard, the president told reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday.
