Super Eagles CB, William Troost-Ekong has described the World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic as a “massive opportunity” to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated match in Uyo, Ekong emphasized the squad’s hunger for success and their determination to etch their names into Nigerian football history.

The Super Eagles are set to face Benin Republic in a pivotal encounter at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

“I remember when we qualified here in 2017 for the 2018 World Cup, and I hope we can make the same memories,” he said. “This is our history that we’re trying to create.”

Ekong acknowledged that Nigeria’s qualification fate is not entirely in their hands but stressed the team’s focus on controlling what they can.

“It’s not 100% in our hands, but it hasn’t been for the last year maybe. Every time, we try to
control what we can control,” he noted.

The captain expressed confidence in the current squad, describing them as a “special generation of players” eager to make their mark on the global stage.

Super Eagles focused and prepared

“The team is really, really focused,” Ekong said. “We all want to be at the World Cup so badly. We’ll give our best and take it minute by minute.”

He emphasized the importance of leaving everything on the pitch, stating:

“At the end of the game, we should be able to look at ourselves and say we gave everything
possible. That’s the only narrative we should focus on right now.”

The final game against Benin Republic represents the decisive step in Nigeria’s World Cup qualification campaign.
