The widow of the assassinated anti-narco mayor of the Mexican city of Uruapan vowed to take up her husband’s crusade as she took his mantle on Wednesday.
In a speech to Michoacan state’s congress after being sworn into office, Grecia Quiroz said her husband Carlos Manzo repeatedly sought aid, but federal authorities “never listened to him.”
Manzo, 40, was gunned down Saturday at a Day of the Dead public event after serving as mayor in the country’s avocado-growing heartland for little over a year.
He campaigned on fighting the country’s notorious drug cartels, and his death sparked protests by supporters who wished to see him succeed in slowing the region’s growing violence.

“Listen carefully and let it be heard loud and clear: Carlos Manzo’s legacy will continue, even if his voice has been silenced,” Quiroz said. “This will go on.”
On Tuesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s government launched a security program for Michoacan, boosting the presence of federal forces in the area.
Quiroz will serve until 2027, completing the term her husband was elected to.
Manzo took office in September 2024, and wore a bulletproof vest when he patrolled the city’s streets. In interviews and on social media, he frequently denounced violent drug-trafficking mafias.
Michoacan’s drug trafficking gangs include the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel and La Nueva Familia Michoacana, which were both designated as terrorist organizations by US President Donald Trump in February.
