At the time of their marriage, all relevant laws categorised Regina Daniel as an adult, including the Constitution of Nigeria, Child’s Right Act of 2003, Land Use Act of 1978, Electoral Act of 2022, the Labour Act of 2004. Even International Law/Treaties such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) 1989 and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, 1991. In essence, while different specific laws may have different age thresholds for specific rights or responsibilities, the overarching constitutional and child rights framework in Nigeria establishes 18 as the general age of adulthood, and Regina Daniel was lawfully categorised as an adult at the time she entered into marriage with Sen Ned Nwoko. I see no reason to vilify the man on the basis of our subjective sentiments.
