The Adamawa State Judiciary, in partnership with the Public and Private Development Centre (PPDC), has freed 57 inmates and granted bail to 29 others as part of a sweeping jail decongestion exercise across correctional centres in the state.
The Chief Judge of Adamawa State, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman, announced the figures on Friday during the conclusion of the jail delivery exercise at the Jimeta Custodial Centre in Yola.
She explained that the committee also reviewed the sentences of three inmates and assessed the cases of 52 non-convicted detainees.
Justice Abdulrahman disclosed that the PPDC paid fines for four inmates who had been convicted with an option of fine, enabling their immediate release.
The Chief Judge urged the freed inmates to conduct themselves responsibly and avoid returning to crime. She noted that many of them were held for minor offences and did not require continued detention.
Ms. Motunrayo Anibaba, the State Programme Manager for PPDC, said the organisation allocated N1 million to cover fines for convicted detainees. She highlighted that reducing overcrowding in custodial centres remains one of the organisation’s core priorities.
According to her, the intervention is part of the “Reforming Pretrial Detention in Nigeria Project (Phase II),” aimed at strengthening justice delivery and safeguarding the rights and dignity of detainees.
Anibaba commended the cooperation between PPDC, correctional officials, and stakeholders in the justice sector, adding that such partnerships remain essential for sustainable reforms.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Haggai Audu expressed gratitude to the judiciary and PPDC, promising that the released inmates would strive to uphold good conduct.
