Chidinma Ojukwu has expressed regret over the death of Super TV Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Michael Ataga, for whose alleged murder she is standing trial at the Lagos High Court, Tafawa Balewa Square.
Under cross-examination by the prosecution on Tuesday, Ms Ojukwu, who has consistently denied the allegations of killing Mr Ataga, confirmed regretting the businessman’s death.
The defendant is being tried alongside her sister, Chioma Egbuchu, and Adedapo Quadri on charges of murder, conspiracy, and stealing. All three have pleaded not guilty.
When the trial resumed, prosecutor Y. A. Sule asked Ms Ojukwu if she regretted Mr Ataga’s death. She replied, “I regret that he died,” while maintaining that she was not the last person to see him alive and denied taking his gadgets from the apartment.
The prosecutor also questioned her about phones and a MacBook in her possession at the time of her arrest. Two receipts from Phone Hub, indicating transactions where Ms Ojukwu sold her iPhone and MacBook, were presented. She admitted selling her MacBook Pro for N495,000, which was deposited into her Sterling Bank account, but denied prior knowledge of the receipts.
Defense counsel Onwuka Egwu objected to the admission of the documents, arguing that the prosecution had not disclosed them in advance. Trial judge Yetunde Adesanya overruled the objection, admitting the documents as relevant evidence.
Ms Ojukwu stated that the MacBook, a birthday gift, was sold days after leaving the apartment and confirmed that her personal details were on the phone recovered by the police, which she had continued to use for calls.
During re-examination, the defence asked about her educational background. Ms Ojukwu said she was a 300-level Mass Communication student before her arrest and acknowledged having no expertise in information technology.
The court adjourned proceedings until 9 February 2026 for continuation of the trial. NAN reports that Ms Ojukwu is the first defence witness, and the defence plans to call about four witnesses, while the prosecution has called about 10 witnesses so far.
Recall that Ms Ojukwu and Mr Ataga were lodged together in a short-let apartment in Lagos, where the deceased was later found dead in a pool of blood. The case, which began in 2021, is now in its fifth year.
