The Department of State Services (DSS) on Friday invited Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, founder of Baze University, Abuja, for questioning over comments perceived as inciting against the Nigerian State, a security source disclosed.
The invitation aligns with established protocols, the source explained, noting that Baba-Ahmed’s recent description of national security efforts as a “joke” could agitate public sentiment and weaken trust in state institutions. “These sessions are not punitive but preventive, aimed at clarifying intent, contextualizing the remarks, and preventing the emergence of narratives that could unintentionally fuel unrest,” the source said.
Concerns have reportedly grown over Baba-Ahmed’s recent public statements on various media platforms, particularly comments interpreted as bordering on a “constitutional crisis.” The security source said that a few days ago, Baba-Ahmed appeared on national television blaming the judiciary and the military for allowing the swearing-in of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima. He allegedly went further, inciting the military by suggesting that the inauguration enabled them to act disrespectfully toward the public.
The source added, “His inflammatory comments carry undertones capable of heightening national tension, especially given the sensitivity of Nigeria’s current political climate. It is also disturbing, considering how similar rhetoric has contributed to instability in countries like Guinea-Bissau and other states.”
Security officials stressed that the DSS is handling the matter cautiously. “It has nothing to do with politics, but the corporate existence of our nation could be threatened if such rhetoric is allowed to fester,” the source said. The official further criticized what he described as complacency by the judiciary and military in not preventing the inauguration, as referenced in Baba-Ahmed’s remarks.
The DSS emphasized that its engagement with Baba-Ahmed is preventive, not punitive. “The aim is to clarify intent, contextualize the remarks, and prevent escalation that could undermine national security,” the source said.
