The House of Representatives has adjourned plenary for two weeks to enable members of various committees to focus on the 2026 Budget Defence of all Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and Government Parastatals.

The adjournment followed an announcement by the Speaker, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, on the floor of the house.

The Speaker announced that the House would focus on one of its most important duties, which is budgeting for governance. The Leader of the House, Hon. Julius Ihonvbere, moved the motion for the two weeks’ adjournment, which was seconded by Hon. Jonathan Gbefwi.

In a related development, the House held a valedictory session to bid farewell to the outgoing Clerk, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, as he retires from civil service. Speaker Abbas praised Dr. Danzaria for his dedication and contributions to the development of the legislature and democracy.

The Speaker commended Dr. Danzaria for his dedication to duty and integrity. “Today, the House gathers in solemn recognition of service. We meet not just to mark the passage of time but to honour a career dedicated to the stability, integrity, and continuity of parliamentary democracy,” he said.

Hon. Abbas highlighted the importance of the Office of the Clerk in providing continuity beyond electoral cycles and safeguarding the legitimacy of parliamentary decisions.

“The Office of the Clerk stands at the heart of this responsibility. It provides continuity beyond electoral cycles, safeguards the legitimacy of parliamentary decisions, and ensures that debate, disagreement, and consensus all occur within lawful bounds,” he added.

The Speaker commended Dr. Danzaria for exhibiting exceptional professionalism and a calm temperament. “He remained composed under pressure, not easily angered, handled relationships without open conflict and his humility was central to his leadership style,” he said.

Dr. Danzaria played a key role in supporting the formulation and implementation of the Legislative Agenda of the 10th House and revising the Standing Orders of the House. His insistence on timely preparation and circulation of Notice Papers improved legislative planning.

Hon. Abbas noted that Dr. Danzaria emphasized the importance of institutional sustainability, leaving behind a considerable legacy. “On behalf of the House of Representatives, I express sincere appreciation for his years of dedication. We wish him good health and fulfillment in retirement,” he added.

Dr. Danzaria has received recognition for his outstanding service, including the “Legislative Administration Leadership Award” from the National Assembly New Media Forum.
Also, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, expressed gratitude to Dr. Danzaria for his dedication and contributions to the development of the legislature and democracy. “His legacy will be remembered for years to come.”
