OPay Nigeria: Give Business Customers a Web & Desktop App

10 solid, practical reasons why OPay must provide a desktop/web app and basic developer API, just like GTBank, UBA, and other serious financial institutions.

An Open Letter to OPay Nigeria Management

Dear OPay Management Team,

We write to you as business users, developers, employers, and daily financial operators who rely heavily on OPay for transactions across Nigeria. This letter represents the collective frustration of thousands of OPay business customers who are increasingly constrained by the absence of a desktop (Windows/macOS) or web-based application.

While OPay has succeeded remarkably as a mobile-first fintech platform, the current mobile-only approach is no longer sufficient for serious business operations.

Other Nigerian banks—GTBank, UBA, Access Bank, Zenith Bank, among others—offer both mobile apps and secure web portals, recognizing that businesses operate primarily from offices, desktops, and structured work environments.

We respectfully but firmly present the following ten reasons why OPay urgently needs a desktop/web app and a basic developer API:

1. Business Work Is Desktop-Based, Not Mobile-Based

Businesses operate from offices using computers, not phones. Forcing staff to use a mobile app from morning till evening is inefficient, unprofessional, and unsustainable.

2. Excessive Screen Time on Phones Is Unsafe and Unproductive

Using a phone all day causes eye strain, reduced productivity, battery dependency, and device overheating. Desktop systems are designed for long-hour professional use.

3. Accounting, Audits, and Reconciliation Require Larger Screens

Transaction reviews, reconciliations, screenshots, exports, and audits are far easier and more accurate on desktops. Mobile screens limit visibility and increase costly errors.

4. Multiple Staff Cannot Reliably Share a Single Mobile Device

Businesses require controlled access for accountants, managers, and auditors. A web app allows role-based access, logs, and accountability—phones do not.

5. Increased Security Through Controlled Office Environments

Desktop environments allow for firewalls, antivirus software, IP restrictions, session controls, and monitoring, reducing fraud risks associated with lost or compromised phones.

6. Competing Banks Already Offer This — OPay Is Falling Behind

GTBank, UBA, Zenith, Access, and others all provide online banking portals alongside mobile apps. OPay risks losing high-value business customers if it remains mobile-only.

7. Businesses Need Downloadable Statements and Data Exports

Companies need CSV, PDF, and Excel exports for tax filing, payroll, compliance, and reporting. This is cumbersome or impossible on a mobile-only platform.

8. A Read-Only API Would Empower Developers Without Risk

Even a simple read-only API—transactions, balances, timestamps—would allow businesses and developers to integrate OPay into ERP systems, dashboards, and accounting tools, without exposing funds to risk.

9. OPay Is Already a Serious Financial Institution

OPay is no longer a small wallet app—it processes millions of daily transactions. Serious financial platforms must support serious business workflows.

10. This Move Will Increase Trust, Adoption, and Revenue

A web app and API will retain business clients, attract enterprises, reduce churn, and position OPay as a long-term banking alternative, not just a consumer wallet.

Our Position Is Clear

We are not asking for the removal of the mobile app.
We are asking for choice, flexibility, and professional tools—the same standards already provided by other Nigerian banks.

At minimum, we urge OPay to introduce:

  • A secure web dashboard for business accounts
  • Optional desktop access (Windows/macOS browsers)
  • A basic, documented, read-only API for developers

Nigeria’s business ecosystem is growing. OPay must grow with it.

We hope this letter is received in the constructive spirit in which it is written and that OPay will take decisive steps to address this pressing need.

Yours sincerely,

Frank Adeche
