Okrika LGA Set to Resume Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise
In a decisive move to restore environmental cleanliness and promote public health, the Chairman of Okrika Local Government Area, Hon. Akuro Tobin, has announced the official resumption of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise across all communities in the LGA. This initiative is scheduled to take effect from Saturday, August 1.
The announcement was made public following a strategic stakeholder meeting with the Community Development Committee (CDC) chairmen, youth leaders, and security representatives. The meeting, which took place at the Chairman’s Conference Hall within the Council Secretariat, served as a platform to align local leadership on the implementation and enforcement of the sanitation policy.
Community Leadership Mobilized for Compliance
During the briefing, Hon. Akuro Tobin directed all community leaders, including CDC heads and traditional authorities, to immediately mobilize residents within their respective jurisdictions. The Chairman emphasized that the resumption of the exercise is crucial to combating health hazards, preventing blocked drainage systems, and mitigating the risks of flooding, which often ravages coastal communities during the rainy season.
“A clean environment is a healthy environment. We must take collective responsibility for our surroundings to prevent the outbreak of preventable diseases,” Tobin stated. He urged residents to cooperate fully with sanitation marshals and security personnel who will be deployed to monitor compliance.
Restriction of Movement and Enforcement
To ensure maximum participation and effectiveness, there will be a temporary restriction of human and vehicular movement across Okrika LGA during the designated sanitation hours (usually from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM). Only individuals on essential services with valid clearance will be permitted to move.
Local authorities have warned that mobile courts will be set up to try individuals and business owners who violate the sanitation laws. The LGA administration is determined to make this exercise sustainable and has put measures in place to facilitate the prompt collection and disposal of waste gathered during the exercise.
Residents of Okrika are advised to use this period to clear drains in front of their homes, weed overgrown surroundings, and properly bag their refuse for collection. Through collective effort, Okrika can achieve a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for all.
