The Economist: Tony Elumelu Founded his Foundation to Institutionalise Luck, Democratise Access to Opportunity and Transform Africa
Africa is home to one of the largest youth populations in the world, yet millions of them are without jobs and are looking for opportunities to scale up their entrepreneurial endeavours.
Tony Elumelu – entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist, knew what it felt like to hope for a ‘big break’ and to look forward to enjoying some luck. For this reason, he founded the Tony Elumelu Foundation to “institutionalise luck”, democratize access to opportunity and in the long term, transform Africa.

Tony Elumelu Foundation Receives Award of Excellence from the Federal Government of Nigeria
Last week, the Tony Elumelu Foundation received the YouWIN! Connect Award of Excellence at the first edition of the YouWIN! Connect Enterprise Education Book and Awards, organised by the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning (FMFBNP) in Abuja.
This recognition was given in celebration of the Foundation’s outstanding contribution to the Micro, Small and Medium Scale Entreprises (MSME) niche of the Nigerian private sector.

Tired of ‘Emerging’? It’s time for Africapitalism
The term Africapitalism was coined by Tony Elumelu, Founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation. He described the concept as “the philosophy that the African private sector has the power to transform the continent through long-term investments, creating both economic prosperity and social wealth”.

TEF CEO, Ifeyinwa Ugochukwu to Join Bill Gates, EU Decision Makers, Others to Speak on Europe and Africa Partnership in Brussels
Ifeyinwa Ugochukwu, CEO of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, will moderate a panel of high-level EU decision-makers, AU Commission representative and senior experts at an event organised by the Finnish Presidency and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Bill Gates is billed to give the keynote at the event tagged “Europe and Africa: Neighbours with a shared future?”.
This event is aimed at the decision-makers who will shape the EU’s development policy and role in the world, particularly with its relationship with Africa. Ifeyinwa drives the conversation citing the case studies and insights from the Tony Elumelu Foundation, the leading philanthropy focused on empowering African entrepreneurs.
TEF-UNDP Entrepreneurship Programme Update
We received over 81,000 applications from African entrepreneurs in the inaugural TEF-UNDP Entrepreneurship Programme.
In the next few days, we will be announcing a shortlist of candidates who will participate in the business training, submission of business plans and business pitching competition.
