The Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA), in conjunction with GUUT Technology Limited, has organised a two-day training programme for members of staff on the Standardisation Process and Adoption of Global Best Practices.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the event with the theme ‘Standardisation and its Impact on Quality Regulatory Process and Adoption of Global Best Practises”, at LCCI, CBD, Alausa Ikeja, the DG of OEQA, Mrs. Abiola Seriki-Ayeni reiterated the need for standardisation as it relates to regulatory processes in the educational sector.
According to her, progress can only be made in the education sector if standardisation is strictly adhered to as well as the commitment to global best practices. She said the theme of the training programme is apt considering the role standardisation plays in regulatory processes viz a viz quality education which the office is mandated to uphold at all times and in compliance with global best practices.
Her words, “In the context of quality education, this training programme is very significant given the relevance of standardisation in the regulatory process. Progress in the education sector is determined largely by the commitment and adoption of global best practices”.
Seriki-Ayeni noted that the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu places a high premium on standardisation, hence the Office has been ensuring that Quality Education is not only instituted but that it is also sustained across the State.
“The Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration places a high premium on the value and standard of Education. As a fact, the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) has been strengthening quality control and regulation of public and private schools through monitoring and evaluation in Lagos State”, the DG averred.
She added that the office has, in the last three years, initiated a lot of laudable programmes to enhance the standard of education in the State, including ‘Read-Aloud’; ‘Lagos Initiative’, ‘The Lagos Learns Together’ and ‘L’ explore Literacy Assessment’ among others.
Also, the office has embarked on a Data Validation/Update Exercise of all private schools operating in Lagos as well as teachers in the State towards effective monitoring and quality assurance. It has also conducted Subject Recognition Inspections for both Private and Public Schools to qualify them for external examinations such as WAEC, NECO and BECE.
The DG explained that the office had to embark on an international standardisation process training programme so that OEQA is not just standardised within Lagos State or Nigeria but can globally compete with counterparts all over the world as well as increase learning outcomes and safety of students.
Seriki-Ayeni, therefore, enjoined participants to maximise and take advantage of the training programme which was designed to drive innovation towards effective regulatory practices.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Abayomi Abolaji, who was represented by Mr. Adeyemi Adebayo, a Director in the Ministry, applauded OEQA for the training programme, noting that no matter how good a teacher is in the classroom, if there is nobody to regulate or standardised what they are doing, they won’t be effective.
Mr. Bamgbose Oluwagbega, lead consultant at GUUT Technology Limited noted that the company is partnering with OEQA as a result of the new educational policy of the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) which is the Education Management System (ESM).
According to him, after the process, OEQA will be an ISO-certified organisation in Education Management System which is ISO 21001 and Quality Management System which is also ISO 21001. With these, the office can adopt these two International Standards into the nucleus of their evaluation machinery.
