Balarabe Abbas, a ministerial nominee from Kaduna State, slumped while appearing before the Senate for his screening on Wednesday.

President Bola Tinubu had nominated Abbas, 65, as a replacement for former governor Nasir el-Rufai, who was reported to have failed security tests after his nomination in July.

Abbas’ citation was being read when he fell, prompting some lawmakers to rise to his rescue.

In a video snippet obtained by FIJ, Senate President Godswill Akpabio was heard requesting that water and sugar be given to the nominee. In the midst of the disruption, Akpabio asked cameramen to turn off their equipment and leave the room.

Abbas holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in political science from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

From 2015 to 2023, he was the Secretary to the Kaduna State Government under the leadership of el-Rufai.
