The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party (LP), under the leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman, has ratified the appointment of an Interim National Working Committee (INWC) to steer the party through a critical transitional phase ahead of the 2027 general elections.
At a high-level meeting held Friday in Abuja, the NEC named Senator Nenadi Usman as Interim National Chairman and Senator Darlington Nwokocha as Interim National Secretary. The meeting was convened by the nine statutory NEC members led by Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti.
Speaking on behalf of the NEC, Governor Otti called on all stakeholders, including former National Chairman Julius Abure, to put aside differences and support efforts to rebuild the party.
“The reason we are here is to ensure that our party is preserved,” Otti said. “Thank you NLC for forming this party, but you must realise the party is now bigger than the NLC. The Supreme Court has spoken; let us respect the constitution and move forward.”
Also addressing the gathering, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, urged Abure and his loyalists to respect the rule of law and embrace the new party leadership.
A communiqué issued after the meeting and read by Senator Nwokocha stated that the NEC session was convened in compliance with the Labour Party Constitution and the April 4, 2025 Supreme Court judgment in Sen. Nenadi Usman v. Labour Party & Anor (SC/CV/56/2025), which clarified that the tenure of Julius Abure had lapsed.
Key resolutions of the NEC include:

Ratification of the Interim National Working Committee (INWC): Senator Nenadi Usman to lead as Interim Chairman, with Senator Darlington Nwokocha as Interim Secretary, among other appointed officials.
Approval of Congress Schedule: The NEC approved a detailed timeline for ward, LGA, state, zonal congresses, and the National Convention.
Membership Revalidation and Registration: Committees will be set up to oversee a nationwide revalidation of existing members and the registration of new ones, in partnership with state chairmen and relevant stakeholders.
Directive to National Secretariat: The Secretariat was mandated to publish guidelines and committee lists to ensure transparency and inclusivity in the internal democratic process.

On electoral preparations, the NEC reaffirmed the Labour Party’s commitment to fielding credible candidates for the upcoming Anambra governorship election and other scheduled by-elections. It urged the Interim NWC to liaise with INEC and comply with the Electoral Act 2022.
The NEC also issued a stern warning against the formation of parallel party structures or any activity inconsistent with the Labour Party Constitution and Supreme Court directives.
“Unity is paramount,” the communiqué noted. “The party must be positioned as a strong, people-oriented, and ideologically grounded movement capable of rescuing Nigeria.”
The NEC called on INEC and security agencies to remain neutral and professional in the conduct of all upcoming elections.
Among those in attendance were Deputy Governor of Abia State Ikechukwu Emetu, BoT Chairman Chief S.O.Z. Ejiofor, NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero, TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo, NLC General Secretary Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, and other key LP and labour leaders.
Party insiders describe the meeting as a pivotal step in the Labour Party’s bid to regain internal cohesion, mobilise its base, and reposition strategically for the 2027 polls.
