The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has scheduled the party’s elective national convention for November 15 and 16, 2025. The event, to be held in Ibadan, Oyo State, will produce a new set of National Working Committee (NWC) members to lead the party for the next four years.
This was disclosed by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, during a press briefing following the NEC meeting held at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja. He said the NEC also approved the constitution of the national convention and zoning committees to ensure a credible process.
In his address at the meeting, Acting National Chairman of the party, Umar Damagum, downplayed the significance of the opposition coalition being championed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing it as an “ill-fated political experiment.”
Atiku, alongside former governors Rotimi Amaechi and Nasir El-Rufai, recently formed a coalition of opposition interests, adopting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
But Damagum dismissed the movement, saying: “On this issue, I am pleased to report that this political experiment is nothing to lose sleep over. They say a bird in hand is worth two in the bush. Some persons have recently learned this truth in the most uncomfortable way. Many who jumped on the coalition bandwagon have already returned to our fold.”
He said the PDP remains Nigeria’s only truly national party with the structure, reach, and legacy to reclaim the presidency. Damagum assured members that the next PDP president would not be politically isolated or left at the mercy of hostile forces.
Also speaking, Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, said the party is resilient and ready to give the APC a tough contest in 2027.
“PDP is a party that has shown resilience. We are working behind the scenes to ensure we remain intact and to create a platform for Nigerians. We will give the APC a big fight,” Bala declared.
Former Kaduna State governor and Secretary of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Ahmed Makarfi, who represented the BoT Chairman, called for unity and strategic planning ahead of the convention.
“The outcome of the convention will determine the political landscape. We must work hard to ensure we survive and guard our utterances in order not to complicate the issues,” he advised.
Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro (Benue South), reiterated that the PDP remains a large political family. He condemned recent defections to the APC, saying some politicians are motivated purely by survival.
“Some people are in politics by accident and gravitate from one party to another. But those of us left will continue to hold the PDP banner high,” Moro assured.
