The Senator Nenadi Usman-led Labour Party (LP) has officially distanced itself from a planned protest scheduled for August 6, 2025, at the National Headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a statement signed by Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser to the Interim National Chairman of the LP, the party declared that the protest does not have its approval or support.
The statement said the planned demonstration is being organised by unknown individuals falsely claiming to represent the Labour Party.
“The organisers are unknown to the party’s leadership, and the action lacks the approval and backing of the party,” it stressed.
The LP urged the public to view anyone participating or promoting the protest as impersonators acting without the party’s consent.
The statement also recalled INEC’s recent rejection of an illegitimate candidate list submitted by the former LP chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, and his faction.
“We received that decision with relief, knowing that INEC would proceed to accept and publish the authentic list submitted by the current, lawful leadership of the party,” the statement read.
The party called on INEC to uphold the Supreme Court’s April 4, 2025, ruling affirming the expiration of the former leadership’s tenure and to update its official platforms accordingly.
Finally, the LP urged security agencies to take note that those planning the protest are political impersonators and should be arrested and prosecuted.
“The Labour Party condemns any such mischief and calls for immediate action in accordance with the law,” the statement concluded.
