The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has lauded the Bayelsa State Police Command for its swift and decisive action in dismissing Sergeant Obrientele Ebiarede over his alleged involvement in the abduction of a Bayelsa State High Court Judge, Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro.
In a statement issued Thursday, the NBA Yenagoa Branch described the move as timely and courageous, adding that it sends a strong message that criminality within the state, especially against the judiciary, will not be tolerated.
Chairman of the branch, Clement B. Kekemeke, stated, “The NBA Yenagoa Branch commends the Bayelsa State Police Command for the prompt dismissal of Sergeant Obrientele Ebiarede and the arrest of eight other suspects. We are pleased that the command acted decisively in a matter that shook the judiciary and threatened public confidence in the rule of law.”
He also assured that the association would offer prosecutorial support and closely monitor the case to ensure justice is served.
According to police reports, Sergeant Ebiarede, a native of Foutorugbene in Ekeremor Local Government Area, was dismissed after he deserted duty for over 30 days and was found to have facilitated logistics in the abduction of Justice Omukoro.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Francis Idu, declared him a deserter under Section 398(1) of the Police Act and Regulations, 2020. He disclosed that eight suspects—six men and two women—have been arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services and Operation Puff Adder. A motorcycle allegedly used by the dismissed officer to aid the kidnappers was recovered from one of the suspects’ homes.
Police authorities have circulated signals to all commands and zonal offices nationwide to apprehend the fugitive officer. His salary has also been suspended.
The Command reiterated its commitment to purging the force of bad elements and restoring public trust in law enforcement. Investigations remain ongoing.
Justice Omukoro was kidnapped in June and held for 13 days. Although no ransom was reportedly paid for his release, the abductors initially demanded ₦300 million in foreign currency.
“This case is not only about Justice Omukoro; it is about the integrity of our justice system and the safety of every judicial officer,” Kekemeke added. “The NBA is fully committed to ensuring that those behind this heinous act face the full weight of the law.”
