Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin, has thrown his weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid for 2027, urging Nigerians to allow him complete two full terms to implement his reform agenda.

The senator made the call at the 2026 National Summit of Former Legislators in Abuja, themed “National Unity and Nation Building: Beyond 2031.” The event drew former lawmakers, including ex-Senate Presidents Pius Anyim and Ken Nnamani, and former House Speakers Patricia Eteh and Yakubu Dogara.

Barau emphasized the need for continuity, citing the rotational system that has ensured stability in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic. “The president is doing well; let’s allow him to complete two full terms,” he said.

The senator’s call aligns with similar appeals from the National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL) and other former lawmakers. NFFL National Coordinator, Hon. Raphael Nnanna Igbokwe, and ex-Senate Presidents also backed Tinubu’s re-election.

Barau pledged to forward the proposal for embedding the rotational system in the Constitution to the National Assembly. “I will certainly do that,” he affirmed.

The summit highlighted national unity, mentorship, and governance continuity. Barau assured collaboration between the National Assembly and NFFL, saying, “Governance doesn’t end with tenure; patriotism is a lifelong duty.”

Former legislators passed a vote of confidence on President Tinubu, endorsing him as the forum’s sole candidate for 2027. The motion was moved by ex-Senator Yakubu Hussaini and seconded by Senator Florence Ita Giwa.

The event underscored former lawmakers’ contributions to democracy and nation-building. Barau urged attendees to generate ideas for a stronger Nigeria.

The Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, convened the summit, which drew lawmakers from across political divides.

The forum reaffirmed its commitment to a united and prosperous Nigeria, with Senator Barau urging support for President Tinubu’s reform agenda.
