One of the biggest games in women’s hockey took place on Tuesday with the USA meeting Canada in a North America battle for supremacy. There couldn’t be more parity between the teams ahead of the game, with USA ranking 1st in world rankings, Canada 2nd — and only 10 points separating the two. The winner of this game secured first in their group, becoming the No. 1 seed entering the quarterfinals.

The big question entering this game was whether or not Canada goaltender Ann-Renee Desbiens could withstand a massive assault from the U.S. scoring led by Alex Carpenter and Joy Dunne. It was made more difficult for Canada with an injury to Marie-Philip Poulin, keeping the captain out of the game.

1st period

USA opened the scoring with Caroline Harvey taking the puck from the blue line, hesitating in the slot, and GOAL she nets one home just 3:45 into the game. A physical, smothering forecheck forced Canada to fight out of their zone early, with USA creating ample chances and out-shooting their opponents.

Abby Murphy set up USA’s second GOAL with just over two minutes left in the period on a beautiful backhand pass to Hannah Bilka who slotted it home with ease. At this point Canada was just trying to get out of the period to stop the onslaught, and almost conceded two more goals in the final minute on a Hillary Knight slapshot, and a subsequent rebound.

2nd period

An early second-period penalty on Canada could have led to the penalty goal, but resulted in a two-minute interference penalty on Sarah Fillier. GOAL The USA made good on the power play as Kirsten Simms’ low shot crossed the line and was initially ruled as a dead puck, but on review it was clear the entire pick crossed the line giving USA a 3-0 lead.

The biggest disparity was shots. With just over 12 minutes left in the second period USA led Canada in shots 17-6, with only one team getting any quality looks. Leila Edwards entered the game to become the first black woman in history to play hockey for Team USA at the Olympic games, and she threatened instantly on the power play with key passing — but it didn’t result in a score.

GOAL Bilka nets her second and Canada is reeling. They have no answers for both the number of chances USA is getting, but also the quality of their shots on net. It’s making a huge difference in this game.

3rd period

It’s clear USA has taken its foot off the gas a little this period with the shots coming, but not quite the same level of energy as previously. GOAL What a tremendous night for Laila Edwards who makes history with just over six minutes left in the game.

Utter decimation from USA who now lead 5-0 and have outclassed Canada at every turn.
