President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday tasked the newly decorated Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to strengthen discipline within the force, deepen inter-agency collaboration, and restore public confidence in policing at what he described as a defining moment for Nigeria’s security.

Speaking at the decoration ceremony in Abuja, the President said Disu’s appointment was rooted in his proven track record and dedication, recalling their working relationship when he served as Governor of Lagos State.

“For you to assume this responsibility, I know your record. I believe in the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos”, the President said.

He urged the new police chief to lead “firmly but fairly,” demand professionalism at every level, and ensure that the protection of lives and property remains the highest priority.

“It’s a daunting challenge, and I know you can do it. You have my full support as you advance the security pillars of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” stated.

Tinubu described Disu as straightforward, disciplined, and respected, encouraging him to draw from the experience of the outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, whom he praised for his leadership and service.

“We are a grateful nation to you,” Tinubu told Egbetokun, thanking him for his dedication to maintaining law and order. He added that the success of the incoming IGP would also reflect the foundation laid by his predecessor.

The President noted that Nigeria is currently grappling with banditry, terrorism, and other criminal threats, stressing that all stakeholders share responsibility for safeguarding national security.

“Nigeria is challenged right now. We all have the responsibility to ensure security of lives and property at this critical period”, he said.

Tinubu expressed confidence that Disu’s operational experience and prior involvement in security planning would help improve outcomes, assuring him of the administration’s backing as he assumes leadership of the police force.
