Rising tensions in the Middle East have cast serious doubt over Nigeria’s scheduled international friendly matches against Iran and Jordan later this month.

The situation follows reports that on Saturday, 28 February, the United States and its ally Israel carried out attacks on Iran, triggering a wave of missile and drone strikes across the region.

In the aftermath, Iranian missiles were reported to have targeted several locations hosting American forces.

Meanwhile, in Qatar, missiles reportedly targeted the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest US military base in the region.

In Kuwait, ballistic missiles and drones were said to have targeted Ali al-Salem Air Base.

Reports also indicated that the Mufaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, which hosts US forces, was among the targets.

The Jordanian military confirmed it intercepted 49 drones and ballistic missiles directed toward its territory.

Iran has since closed its airspace, with no flights currently permitted in or out of the country.

The nation is also observing a 40-day mourning period following the reported passing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Nigeria is scheduled to face Iran on March 27 and Jordan on March 31 in a four-Nation Invitational Tournament in Amman, Jordan.

The Super Eagles already announced the fixtures on its official Instagram account however, the Iranian FA (FFIRI), has yet to confirm whether the friendly will proceed as planned.

NFF is also yet to make an official statement regarding the situation.

FFIRI president Mehdi Taj expressed uncertainty about the national team’s ability to participate in World Cup matches in the United States following the recent attacks.

He stated that after such events, it is difficult for the team to look forward to the World Cup with hope.

Mehdi Taj’s remark have intensified speculation that the friendly against Nigeria, which forms part of Iran’s World Cup preparations, could be at risk.

Uncertain in Jordan

While the Jordanian FA has not announced a suspension of local football activities, the Asian Football Confederation has officially suspended all competitions, citing safety concerns for players and fans.

No continental matches will take place in the affected areas, and Jordan’s airspace is currently closed.

With regional airspace restrictions, security concerns, and official confirmations still pending, the four-nation tourney now hangs in the balance as the Middle East grapples with escalating tensions.
