Former Super Eagles forward, Victor Agali has raised concerns about the welfare of ex-footballers.

Agali expressed disappointment that several former internationals only receive support when they are linked to influential figures, rather than through a structured welfare system.

“We talk about pensions, we know about pensions. When celebrating, what do you give people when they are alive?

“When they have problems and challenges, how many people even know they are going through difficulties?,” he quipped.

He referenced the late Peter Rufai, noting that many were unaware of his struggles before his passing.

Agali also mentioned Henry Nwosu, stating that intervention in his case only came through the support of a state governor.

“Sometimes when you look at people who come out to help, celebrate, or sustain others, they are usually those in politics.

“If you are not connected to a state governor or someone in the political space, then if anything happens to you, you are on your own,” he added.

The issue of unpaid entitlements and neglect of former Nigerian football figures has remained a recurring concern.

Several ex-players and coaches have previously complained about being owed salaries and benefits.

One notable case is that of late Super Eagles coach Amodu Shuaibu, who played a key role in Nigeria’s qualification for two FIFA World Cups.

He passed away on June 10, 2016, at the age of 58.

Reports at the time, including claims by former goalkeeper Peterside Idah, suggested that the NFF owed him several months of unpaid salaries prior to his death.

It was also alleged that Amodu had expressed financial distress and was struggling with living expenses before his passing.

Following his death, alongside that of Stephen Keshi, the House of Representatives mandated the NFF on 14 June, 2016, to ensure the payment of all outstanding entitlements owed.

Agali’s comments add to ongoing calls for a more structured and transparent welfare system to support retired footballers.
