Arne Slot became Liverpool’s second shortest serving head coach in the Premier League era after the club announced the Dutchman will not return for the new season.

Liverpool dropped the bombshell news on Saturday, in a statement that praised their former Gaffer was insists the split was non-negotiable.

The statement published on the club’s website read in part:

“He also helped guide the club through one of the most difficult periods imaginable following the loss of Diogo. The compassion and humanity he showed throughout that time said a great deal about him as a person.

“As such, we can only wish Arne well in the next stage of his coaching career, with our expectation being that he will continue to be successful. We do so in the knowledge that his Liverpool legacy is intact and will become yet more meaningful in the years and decades to come.

“Nevertheless, the conclusion we have come to is built on a belief that the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction. That does not diminish the work Arne has done here, or the respect we have for him. Nor is it a reflection of his talents. Rather, it is indicative of the need for a different approach.

“Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield.”

In the last months of the 2025/26 season, Slot had seemed to lose the dressing room with his most charismatic player Mohamed Salah challenging the coach’s decisions – Salah himself announced his departure from Liverpool.

Salah’s controversial IG post:

“It took hard work and I always did everything I could to help the club get there. Nothing makes me prouder than that.

“Us crumbling to yet another defeat this season was very painful and not what our fans deserve. I want to see Liverpool go back to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and back to being a team that wins trophies. That is the football I know how to play and that is the identity that needs to be recovered and kept for good.

“It cannot be negotiable and everyone that joins this club should adapt to it. Winning some games here and there is not what Liverpool should be about. All teams win games.

“Liverpool will always be a club that means a great deal to me and to my family. I want to see it succeed for long after I have moved on. As I’ve always said, qualifying to next season’s Champions League is the bare minimum and I will do everything I can to make that happen.”

Short Stay

In the Premier League era, Slot was Liverpool’s second manager to win the league title after Jurgen Klopp.

However, he also became the second coach with the shortest stint following Roy Hodgson’s brief six months at Anfield.

Although the club has given no hint what decision they will take to fill the vacancy, reports have strongly linked Liverpool with a move for Andoni Iraola.

The 43 year-old Spanish Manager is believed to be open to the idea of staying in England, albeit his representatives have held talks with Bayer Leverkusen since the end of the Pl season.

Liverpool will Rebuild

After winning the PL title in his first season, the only Liverpool manager to do so, Arne Slot was backed in the following transfer window with a net spend of £189 million (£446 million gross).

However, the first team also lost several key players including Luiz Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Trent Alexander-Arnold and, tragically, Diogo Jota.

On the other hand, their new signings struggled to make a big impact and the constant internal scrutiny from his players set Arne Slot on a difficult path.

Nonetheless, the club will look to bounce back stronger next season, where their stars will be expected to step up and fire them back into title contenders.
