The Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, in Niger State, has relocated its 41 pioneer 300-level medical students to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in Kaduna, to continue their medical education and clinical training pending the completion of the university’s teaching hospital.
The development followed the absence of a fully operational teaching hospital and adequate clinical training facilities at IBB University, a situation that necessitated the transfer of the pioneer medical students to prevent disruption to their academic programme.
Addressing the students at the university’s main campus in Lapai, the Vice-Chancellor of IBBU, Mohammed Sulaiman, described the relocation as a strategic intervention aimed at ensuring that the students’ academic progress remains uninterrupted while efforts continue towards establishing the institution’s teaching hospital.
Sulaiman said the arrangement was made possible through the collective efforts of the Niger State Government under Governor Umaru Bago, the Federal Ministry of Education, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and other relevant stakeholders.
He disclosed that construction work on the university’s temporary teaching hospital was ongoing, with operations expected to commence by September 2026, to enable subsequent medical students to undertake their clinical training within IBB University.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, following extensive consultations, the management of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, agreed to admit all 41 pioneer medical students into its College of Medical Sciences.
He explained that the students would undergo intensive tutorials and continue their medical training ahead of their professional examinations scheduled for September 2026.
Sulaiman commended the management of ABU, particularly its Vice-Chancellor, Adamu Ahmed, the Provost of the College of Medicine, and other officials, for their cooperation in facilitating the transition.
In his remarks, the Provost of IBBU’s College of Medical and Health Sciences, Abubakar Aliyu, said an interactive session was organised to further sensitise the 200- and 300-level MBBS students on the academic structure, regulations and expectations associated with medical education.
The relocation marks a significant transition for the pioneer medical students, who will continue their training at ABU Zaria pending the completion and commencement of clinical services at IBB University’s teaching hospital.
