An aide to the Delta State Governor, Ossai Ovie Success, has said South African singer Tyla should apologise to Nigerians despite removing Lagos from her A*POP World Tour schedule.
In a post on X on Friday, Ossai said cancelling the Lagos concert was not enough, insisting that the singer owed Nigerians an apology for initially including the city on her tour while allegedly supporting xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa.
“I am glad she heeded the calls from Nigerians and cancelled the Lagos concert. However, beyond the cancellation, she owes us all an apology for even listing Lagos in the first place, knowing fully well that she supported the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa,” he wrote.
He also urged the Grammy-winning singer to use her platform to speak against the mistreatment of people of any nationality, expressing disappointment over her actions and saying he hoped she had learned from the backlash.
Tyla recently removed Lagos from the itinerary of her A*POP World Tour after days of growing calls by some Nigerians for a boycott of the planned December 22 concert.
Checks by Newstellers on Friday confirmed that the Lagos date had been taken off the singer’s official tour schedule after previously appearing on promotional materials for the global tour.
The boycott campaign was driven by renewed concerns over reported xenophobic attacks against Nigerians living in South Africa, with several social media users arguing that the concert should not proceed while such concerns remained unresolved.
Media personality Dotun and author Solomon Buchi were among those who publicly backed the boycott, urging Nigerians to withhold support for the concert. The controversy also reignited discussions over the case of Chidimma Adetshina, the former Miss Universe Nigeria of Nigerian descent, who is reportedly facing deportation proceedings in South Africa. As of Friday, Tyla and her management had not issued any statement explaining the removal of the Lagos concert from the tour schedule.
