Officers of the Nigeria Police Force fired gunshots and tear gas at protesting students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) in Lagos on Wednesday morning.
In one of the videos shared on X by @wealthgather, a user of the microblogging platform, some students of the institution said that they were dispersed from the protest ground with gunshots and tear gas from police officers at the same time.
“We are here, hiding for our lives, resting. Tear gas, rubber bullets, see my hands,” one of the students said in the video.
“These people are bastards. They shot live bullets at UNILAG students. This is crazy. This is crazy.”

In another video seen by FIJ, sporadic gunshots were heard in the background as students ran for dear life.
One of the fleeing students said, “UNILAG is shooting people. We are on live.”
While another female student in the background said, “We will continue it. We continue it.”
FIJ can confirm that Femi Adeyeye, a recent graduate of the university, has been arrested and was taken away in a police van.

FIJ spoke to Adeyeye at 10 am. He said he was picked up alongside some other students by the police and they were in their van at a junction in the university.
The students of the tertiary institution were protesting an increment in their tuition fees. The management of the institution had approved an over 100% increment in the usual tuition fees paid by the students. This decision was met with mixed reactions.
