Former Special Adviser to the immediate past Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Jimi Lawal, is set to spend an additional 14 days in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) as investigations continue into his alleged involvement in a fraudulent Light Rail Project valued at N11 billion.
Recall on Thursday that Lawal was detained and being interrogated by ICPC officials at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja. The commission has now obtained a court warrant to keep Lawal in custody for 14 days to further their investigation.
ICPC spokesperson Demola Bakare confirmed this on Friday that Lawal would not be released at this time, stating, “Jimi Lawal is still with us, we cannot release him now; we have obtained warrant to keep him for 14 days. Until we are able to get what we want from him.”
The alleged scam involves a Light Rail Project in Kaduna State, which is believed to have been fraudulently valued at N11 billion. The ICPC is investigating Lawal’s role in the project and any potential wrongdoing.
As the investigation unfolds, more details are expected to emerge regarding the nature of the alleged scam and Lawal’s involvement. The extended custody period will allow the ICPC to gather further evidence and thoroughly question the former Special Adviser.
The case has drawn attention to the ongoing efforts by anti-corruption agencies in Nigeria to combat graft and ensure accountability in public projects. The outcome of this investigation is likely to have significant implications for both Lawal and the fight against corruption in the country.
