The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has decried the appointment of individuals with questionable integrity into public office, warning that Nigeria must end the practice of rewarding those who steal public funds with ministerial positions.
Speaking during an appearance on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme aired on Wednesday, the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor said the nation’s value system has collapsed, with materialism now taking precedence over honesty and integrity.
“A society in which material wealth regardless of how it is acquired is respected… where people known to have stolen money are rewarded with ministerial appointments… such a society will only continue to reproduce itself,” Sanusi remarked.
He condemned the growing trend of celebrating individuals with tainted reputations and recycling them into government roles, insisting that this practice entrenches corruption and dishonesty in governance.
“Many people go into government solely to make money but you don’t go into government to make money,” Sanusi said, stressing that most public officials today lack moral upbringing and a genuine sense of public service.
According to him, the nation has abandoned values such as diligence, honesty, and compassion, replacing them with a blind glorification of wealth, regardless of its source. “We’ve been ruled by people who have no values. They define themselves by their material possessions—houses, private jets, billions in bank accounts,” he lamented.
Reflecting on the legacy of the late former Head of State, Murtala Muhammed, Sanusi emphasised that Nigeria is in dire need of a complete overhaul of its moral compass and institutions. He argued that the civil service has been systematically weakened by politicians and called for urgent reforms to empower civil servants to resist unlawful instructions.
Sanusi concluded that meaningful change cannot be achieved by the president, governors, or ministers alone, urging Nigerians to take collective responsibility in reclaiming and restoring ethical standards in public life.
