Passengers may face flight delays and cancellations starting Monday, August 11, 2025, as a coalition of aviation unions has directed all staff of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) to suspend services indefinitely over unresolved salary disputes.
The decision was announced in a joint notice issued on August 7 by four major unions representing aviation professionals: the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service, Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE).
In a joint letter dated July 31, 2025, the unions gave a seven-day ultimatum to Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, demanding the implementation of a new salary structure for NAMA workers, which has been delayed for over eight months despite concluded negotiations with agency management.
The unions warned that failure to address the issue would lead to a total withdrawal of services by NAMA staff, a move that could cripple the country’s aviation sector.
With the ultimatum expiring on Thursday, August 7, the unions urged all stakeholders in the aviation industry to prepare for potential service disruptions and instructed all NAMA employees to comply with the strike directive.
“As you are all aware, the notice of withdrawal of services given on 30th July, 2025, expires at the end of today. Therefore, all workers of NAMA are hereby directed to stop all services with effect from Monday, 11th August, 2025 at 05hrs indefinitely,” the statement read.
“All airlines and allied companies, as well as the flying public, are hereby informed of the above-stated action and advised to make alternative travel arrangements.”
The unions emphasized that only joint communications from their national secretariats would be recognized regarding further directives on the matter.
The statement was signed by AbdulRasaq Saidu (Secretary General, ANAP), Odinakachukwu J. Igbokwe (Deputy General Secretary, NUATE), Frances Akinjole (Principal Deputy General Secretary, ATSSSAN), and Alo Lawrence O. (General Secretary, AUPCTRE).
Copies of the notice were sent to key aviation authorities, including Minister Keyamo, the Managing Directors of NAMA and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Commissioner of Police (Airport Command), Directors of State Security at all airports, and the Airline Operators of Nigeria.
