The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, has said that monthly environmental sanitation exercises are insufficient to keep Abuja clean.

He called for investment in waste recycling plants to address the city’s waste management challenges.

Wike stated this after inspection tour of some ongoing projects on Friday, arguing that the current model of monthly sanitation, where residents bring out refuse, clean drainages, and allow contractors to collect waste only provides a temporary fix.

“If you do it once in a month, how does that make the city clean?” Wike asked. “If you do it on a Saturday, that Saturday is clean. But that alone is not a major solution.”

He said effective waste management must go beyond collection and disposal. According to him, cities worldwide rely on recycling systems that turn waste into new products.

“Waste management disposal is not just a business task. All over the world, you must have recycling. You must have a factory for recycling the waste,” he said. “Having a dump site is not enough to say that the problem is solved. It requires another idea where you have to have a waste factory for the purpose of using the waste to create another product.”

Wike disclosed that discussions are already underway, and the FCT administration is receiving proposals from firms with experience in waste-to-product projects abroad.

The push for recycling facilities aligns with broader efforts to improve sanitation and sustainability in the capital.
