Africa is the world’s second-largest continent, spanning roughly 30.4 million square kilometers. It dwarfs the Americas on the globe, with a landmass larger than the United States, China, India, Japan, and most of Europe combined. The reason for the visual size discrepancy between Africa and the Americas lies in the 1569 Mercator projection map. Originally designed to help sailors navigate the globe, the Mercator projection preserves compass directions but significantly stretches landmasses located far from the equator while shrinking those near it. Because of this cartographic distortion, North America and Greenland appear disproportionately massive, while Africa—which sits astride the equator—looks visually compressed. For instance, on standard Mercator maps, Greenland appears to be roughly the same size as Africa. The Root of the Distortion: The Mercator Problem
The map most people are familiar with is the Mercator projection, created by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569. It was designed for sailors. It preserves compass directions perfectly, allowing ships to navigate across oceans in straight lines.
However, translating a 3D sphere onto a 2D flat sheet of paper requires stretching. The Mercator projection stretches landmasses increasingly as they move farther away from the equator.
    • The Equator Factor: Africa sits directly astride the equator. Because of this, it undergoes almost no stretching on a Mercator map.
    • The Polar Stretch: North America, Greenland, and Europe sit far north of the equator. The map stretches them drastically, making them look artificially massive.

Because of this distortion, Greenland looks equal in size to Africa on paper. In reality, Africa is 14 times larger than Greenland.

On a standard map, Canada and the United States look large enough to swallow Africa whole. In reality, Africa covers 30.4 million square kilometers, while the entire North American continent (including Canada, the US, Mexico, and Greenland) covers only 24.7 million square kilometers.

The contiguous United States fits inside the African continent three times over, with plenty of room left for the UK, Japan, and America’s island territories.

Why True Size Matters

To fix this, organizations like the African Union have backed initiatives like the “Correct the Map” campaign. This movement advocates for schools and organizations to ditch the Mercator projection in favor of equal-area maps—such as the Gall-Peters or Equal Earth projections. These alternative maps distort the shapes of countries slightly but keep their relative sizes perfectly accurate.
