Distinguished legal practitioner, public interest advocate, Christian leader and philanthropist, Dr Monday Onyekachi Ubani, SAN, PhD, marks his birthday today, Monday, July 27, 2026, in gratitude to God for a life shaped by purpose, discipline and service, coming just six days after Babcock University conferred on him a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Law on July 21, 2026, completing an academic dream that survived four decades of delay, family obligation, personal loss and professional demand.
Ubani’s story begins in the late 1970s at Awomukwu Primary School in present-day Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, where he and one other pupil, Moses Ndulewe from Amapu in Awomukwu, were the only two candidates to obtain credit passes in the First School Leaving Certificate Examination conducted by the then Imo State Government.
His performance caught the attention of his headmaster, Mr Ahia from Oboro, Ikwuano, who advised that the boy must never be denied education because of his rare intellectual promise.
That advice proved decisive. His father had planned for him to become a company-trained mechanic under Dunlop Nigeria Limited at Oba Akran, Ikeja, a respectable and stable path at the time. But the person assigned to bring his First School Leaving Certificate from the village to Lagos was delayed when his bus broke down at Ore in Ondo State. Unable to present the certificate on the required Monday, the young Ubani lost the opportunity.
What looked like misfortune became the turning point of a life. His uncle, Mr Reuben Agwu, reminded his father of Headmaster Ahia’s warning, and the intervention preserved his path to formal education.
Ubani gained admission to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1983 to read Political Science. He completed two full years before making the decision that would shape everything that followed.
Inspired by the late human rights icon Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, he abandoned Political Science and crossed over to Law in 1985, forfeiting two years of academic work in the process. The decision was costly. It was also defining.
He graduated in 1989 with a Second Class Upper Division in Law and proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, where he again distinguished himself, becoming the only graduate of the University of Nigeria’s 1989 Law Class to attain a Second Class Upper Division in the 1990 Nigerian Law School set.
After National Youth Service in Kano State, he obtained a Master’s Degree in Comparative Constitutional Law from the University of Lagos.
He had hoped to proceed immediately to a doctorate. Marriage, children, family responsibility and the demands of building a practice intervened, and the dream waited.
In December 2021, he enrolled for a PhD in Law at Babcock University. Barely a month later, his father died in January 2022 at the age of 101. As the only surviving son and child, Ubani took responsibility for the burial and withdrew temporarily from the programme.
Returning after the April 2022 burial proved difficult. Encouragement from Professor Mrs Titilayo Owolabi, Professor Dorcas Odunaike and Dr Ibe Moses helped bring him back.
In 2025, as he prepared to focus fully on his thesis, his mother died at the age of 90. After her burial in December 2025, he returned to the work with renewed determination and completed it.
On July 21, 2026, the degree was conferred.
Ubani has served as Chairman of the NBA Ikeja Branch (2012-2014), 2nd National Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association (2016-2018), and Chairman of the NBA Section on Public Interest and Development Law, NBA-SPIDEL (2021-2023), where he championed high-profile public interest and human rights cases.
He currently serves as Chairman of the NBA Electoral Reform Committee, appointed to strengthen the responsiveness, transparency and structure of the association’s internal elections, a mandate that could hardly be more consequential at this moment in the Bar’s history.
He is Legal Adviser to the President of the Senate, Assemblies of God Nigeria, and legal counsel to several corporate and charitable organisations. He is the principal partner at Ubani & Co., and is widely known for pro bono service to the oppressed, which earned him the titles “the People’s Advocate” and “Senior Advocate of the Masses.”
He is proudly recognised as the first Senior Advocate of Nigeria from Ikwuano, Abia State.
Beyond the profession, Ubani is an Ambassador of the Kingdom in Assemblies of God Nigeria, a dedicated Deacon, a committed Clasfonite, and a former President of the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International, Allen Executive Chapter, where he made history by pioneering the establishment of two new fellowship chapters in a single day.
He is also a published author, his memoir, “MOU: The Story of Legal and Human Rights Activism,” recounting his journey and impact on the Nigerian legal system.
As he marks another year, Dr Ubani gives all glory to Almighty God for His unfailing mercy, favour and guidance, and reaffirms his commitment to justice, integrity, national development, community service and the advancement of God’s Kingdom.
He expressed heartfelt appreciation to his family, friends, colleagues, associates and well-wishers for their steadfast support, prayers and encouragement over the years, looking forward with renewed hope to greater opportunities to serve God and humanity.
Tributes have continued to pour in from across the legal profession, the Church and the wider society, with many describing him as a bridge-builder, a mentor, a visionary leader, and a shining example of principled leadership.
From a small village classroom in Awomukwu to the Inner Bar and now to the highest academic qualification in law, his has been a journey sustained by purpose, courage and grace.
