‘Nothing Can Stop Us!’ – Christy Ucheibe Warns as Super Falcons Star Defends Oshoala, Ordega

With the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations underway in Morocco, Super Falcons midfielder, Christy Ucheibe has delivered a powerful message to the rest of Africa.

Nigeria are not travelling to defend their title; they are travelling to win it again and get the job done.

Fresh from ending a glittering six-year spell with Portuguese giants Benfica, the 25-year-old has declared that the Super Falcons remain united, hungry and determined to secure an unprecedented 11th WAFCON title while also extending Nigeria’s remarkable record of qualifying for every FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Ucheibe also threw her support behind experienced stars Asisat Oshoala and Francisca Ordega, insisting critics questioning their inclusion have ignored what they continue to produce on the pitch.

‘Nothing Will Stop Us’ From Winning the 11th Title

Speaking to Brila.net ahead of Nigeria’s title defence, Ucheibe said the reigning African champions have exactly the same hunger that carried them to continental glory last year.

Despite already being Africa’s most successful women’s national team with 10 WAFCON titles, she insisted the desire inside the dressing room remains as strong as ever.

“We achieved the tenth (WAFCON title), so nothing will stop us.”

“Only if God says it is not our time to win the eleventh, then we will not going to win because, I feel this group, we are together, we are united.”

“And when we say we want to do something, we will do it.”

The midfielder continued, stating that unity remains the biggest strength of Justin Madugu’s squad.

“And we always stick together, work as one, so that we will achieve that dream of the eleventh title and also to qualify for the World Cup next year.”

Keeping Nigeria’s Proud World Cup Tradition Alive

Beyond retaining the continental title, Ucheibe revealed another major objective for the Super Falcons.

The 2026 WAFCON also serves as Africa’s qualifying tournament for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, and Nigeria are determined to preserve their perfect qualification record.

The Super Falcons are the only African nation to have appeared at every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup since the competition began in 1991.

Ucheibe says maintaining that tradition is non-negotiable.

“Super Falcons has been in the World Cup all the time when they play World Cup.”

She added that even if the team falls short of lifting another trophy, World Cup qualification must still be secured.

“So, even if we don’t win, we will make the World Cup.”

Respect Every Opponent, Fear None

Although Nigeria enter the tournament as defending champions and Africa’s most decorated side, Ucheibe insisted there will be no room for complacency.

According to the midfielder, the Super Falcons will approach every opponent with the same focus, determination and winning mentality that helped them reclaim the continental crown.

The squad, she believes, understands the responsibility that comes with wearing Nigeria’s colours and remains fully committed to delivering another successful campaign.

As she prepares to represent Nigeria once again on the continental stage, Ucheibe is also beginning a new chapter in her club career.

Portuguese champions Benfica have officially confirmed the departure of the Super Falcons midfielder following the expiration of her contract, bringing an end to an extraordinary six-year stay.

During her time with the Portuguese giants, Ucheibe established herself as one of the club’s most important players.

She made 179 appearances, scored 11 goals, and helped Benfica dominate domestic football with an incredible collection of silverware that included:

• Six Portuguese league titles
• Two Portuguese Cups
• Five League Cups
• Two Super Cups

Her departure closes one of the most successful chapters of her professional career as she prepares for a new challenge after WAFCON.

Ucheibe completely rejected that argument.

Speaking about Ordega, she praised both her footballing ability and her contribution to Nigerian football.

“She’s a wonderful player and a wonderful person.”

“She has done so much for Nigeria and Super Falcons.”

She argued that experienced players should not be discarded simply because they have spent many years with the national team.

“We’re not going to take the facts here because she doesn’t do for the stage long.”

Drawing comparisons with other footballing nations, she added:

“Then if other people don’t come, they’ll constantly drop her.”

“It’s not supposed to be like that.”

“If you go to Brazil, you’ll see how they play.”

Ucheibe insisted that age should never become the deciding factor if a player continues to perform.

“She doesn’t play since the World Cup. Nobody will see how she drops.”

“If your body carries you, why not?”

“She’s still playing.”

The midfielder pointed to Ordega’s continued performances at club level as proof she still deserves her place.

“She’s still active.”

“She’s still scoring goals.”

“So for me, I don’t see any issue with her being in the team because she’s a great player.”

Christy Ucheibe also rallied behind six-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year, Asisat Oshoala, who continues to attract criticism despite remaining one of Africa’s most decorated footballers.

“Her presence also helps regarding Asisat Oshola.”

She acknowledged that criticism will always exist.

“People must talk.”

But she admires the striker’s ability to ignore outside noise and remain focused on football.

“And I’m not saying people talk and she hears what they talk about.”

“One thing I like about her is that she listens to the noise.”
