Not chewing solid food for a full year (relying only on blender liquids) is not recommended for a healthy person and carries real downsides, even if your teeth are currently fine. Short-term soft or liquid diets are sometimes used medically (e.g., after jaw surgery or for swallowing issues), but exclusive long-term liquid feeding in someone who can chew is unnatural and can cause problems.

Chewing is the first step of digestion. It mechanically breaks food down, mixes it with saliva (which contains enzymes like amylase that start carbohydrate digestion), and triggers the cephalic phase response: signals that prepare the stomach (acid production), pancreas, and gallbladder for incoming food. Skipping this changes several systems.
- Digestion and gut: Larger (or already-liquefied but un-salivated) particles or reduced digestive signaling can lead to bloating, gas, indigestion, constipation, or altered gut motility. Animal studies of powdered/liquid diets show drops in beneficial short-chain fatty acid–producing bacteria, mild colonic inflammation, and constipation-like symptoms that improve when chewing is restored. Reduced cephalic stimulation can lower gastric acid and bile output, promoting dysbiosis. Fiber is often lower or processed differently in pure liquids, worsening constipation risk.
- Nutrient absorption and status: Even well-blended food may not be absorbed as efficiently without the full sequence of chewing + saliva + proper digestive priming. Long-term exclusive liquid diets (especially homemade) commonly risk shortfalls in fiber, certain vitamins/minerals, and complete protein quality unless carefully formulated and supplemented. Muscle loss is a concern if protein/calories are inadequate. Professional medical liquid diets are fortified and monitored; DIY blender meals usually are not.
- Jaw muscles, TMJ, and bone: Chewing provides mechanical load that maintains muscle tone (masseter, temporalis, etc.) and helps preserve jawbone density via stimulation. Prolonged soft/liquid diets in animal models reduce mandibular condyle and fossa growth/size, thin cartilage layers, lower cell proliferation, and change muscle fiber composition/weight. In adults this can mean weaker jaw muscles, possible atrophy, reduced bite force over time, and less bone stimulation (analogous to how missing teeth lead to jawbone resorption). Your desire to rest the jaw from heavy gum chewing is reasonable—excessive gum is a common trigger for muscle fatigue, TMJ pain, clicking, or headaches—but eliminating all chewing for a year is excessive rest and risks the opposite problem (disuse). Soft foods or limited controlled chewing is usually enough for recovery from gum overuse.
- Saliva and oral health: Chewing strongly stimulates saliva. Less chewing tends to reduce flow. Saliva cleans teeth, neutralizes acids, supplies minerals for remineralization, and controls oral bacteria. Lower saliva raises risks of dry mouth (xerostomia), plaque, caries, and shifts in oral microbiota. Blended acidic fruits/veggies sipped frequently can also increase erosion risk. Your teeth start healthy, but a year of reduced salivary stimulation and possible dietary changes can still harm them.
- Satiety, weight, and metabolism: Chewing and the time/effort of eating solid food contribute to fullness signals (including effects on ghrelin and other hormones). Liquids are often less satiating, which can lead to overeating calories or, conversely, under-eating if the diet is monotonous. Very-low-calorie liquid approaches carry extra risks (gallstones, metabolic slowdown, rebound weight gain). Brain and stress benefits of chewing (increased cerebral blood flow to certain areas, mild stress reduction via HPA-axis effects in some studies) would also be lost.
- Other: Possible reduced pleasure/social aspects of eating, monotony leading to poor adherence or disordered patterns, and (in extreme under-nutrition cases) broader effects on energy, immunity, or bone. Cognitive associations exist mainly in older adults with tooth loss/poor mastication; a year of total liquid feeding is not the same as lifelong impairment, but it removes a normal stimulus.
Bottom line: A year of only blender liquids is unlikely to be harmless. Occasional smoothies or short soft-diet periods (e.g., a few days to a couple of weeks to rest an overworked jaw from gum) are fine. Long-term exclusive liquids should only happen under medical/dietitian supervision with complete nutritional formulas. Better approach for gum rest: stop or sharply limit gum, eat normally but choose softer textures for a short period if the jaw is sore, practice good posture/relaxation for the jaw, and resume normal chewing once rested.
