The Associated Port and Marine Development Company headquartered in Lagos State has refused to pay Akinwande Ilori, its ex-employee, his 13-month salary arrears.

Ilori, a former assistant IT manager at the privately owned shipping and logistics services provider, explained to FIJ that the company employed him in 2013 and he distinguished himself.

In 2018, he decided to exit the company on personal grounds and he conveyed his resignation appropriately to the company. Before turning in his exit notice, the company had owed him for several months.

“I worked with the company as an assistant IT manager from 2013 to 2018. Although I was employed to work as an assistant, my job was actually that of a manager because there was none throughout my time in the company. I can confidently say I worked to the best of my ability to deliver productive services to the company. The management attested to this and commended me on many occasions,” Ilori explained to FIJ.

The IT specialist also said that the salary arrears covered 13 months and the company confirmed the accumulation in an email sent to him after he voluntarily terminated his appointment.

He further told this medium that the company’s failure to pay the outstanding salary arrears of N1,707,566.83 had negatively affected his life goals and aspirations. The company appears to be unconcerned about his plight despite several pleas.

Confirmation of his outstanding pay by Alias-Emeka Nwachukwu

“According to my diary, the company did not pay me for 14 months before I left. I sent a month-to-month analysis of the period I was not paid, and the company in its response said it was 13 months. As I was not ready to contest a month’s pay, I raised no objection. I just want my money paid.

“Olise-Emeka Nwachukwu, group head, human resources and administration, acknowledged some of the electronic messages I sent to the company. I have also pleaded with Mr. Diamond Atuyota, managing director, countless times to pay me my money but without a positive outcome. At a point, the managing director instructed me to channel my request through the HR.

“It’s been a hectic period for me appealing to the management to release my money. I felt the urge to leave the company after two months of no pay in 2016, but I persevered and continued my work. It is almost five years now since I resigned, but the management is bent on denying me my money. The managing director and the HR stopped responding to my messages in 2021.”

FIJ observed that the HR read most of the WhatsApp messages Ilori sent to him in 2021, 2022 and early 2023 requesting for updates, but he responded to none.
